Hehe. It's not a bad idea for new Linux users to play on a box they don't absolutely, positively need to use immediately. There are so many cool aspects to the system. And I'm really digging Scrivener so far!

I have a friend I met on Facebook who does all his computing on Linux. He tried to explain to me how to get a new computer (a build it yourself kind) and then set up Linux, and it sounded great, but I know my computer limitations. If I wasn't so techno-stupid, I totally would have done it. Linus sounds like the way to go!

It may feel weird (and I do agree!) to guest post, but you did a great job, and lots of people appreciated the geeky info - myself included! Thanks for coming over and teaching!

So many distractions from writing, huh? Whether they charge in the future or not, I think overall Amazon has benefited indie writers. It's now up to us to take it to the next level... whatever that is :-)

All this concerns me because I think Amazon is just taking advantage by requiring writers to pay. I don't think that should be happening at all. Good for you for saving your money for your work!

I knew exactly what you meant :-) In his followup post, Guthrie lays out a business model where charging would benefit Amazon. It's a future I can envision. I just hope to have a few books behind
me before it happens. :-D

I re-read my statement, and realized how obnoxious I sounded! In the first paragraph I make it sound like I think my writing is good "stuff" and anyone who would pay to have their "stuff" published isn't, but that totally isn't what I meant. I only meant that a lot of authors I know would refuse to pay anyone to publish, that's all. ;)

My main thought as I read your post is: People who can't write often don't know it. Charging anyone to publish their book won't necessarily stop the dreck. It might stop Amazon from getting good books, though, because I can't imagine I'm so different from anyone else that I will not pay to have my "stuff" printed, especially if it is only in digital form.

Paying Amazon a fee to allow me to put my books on their virtual shelves only will feed Amazon more money from authors. It's like vanity presses, all over. You will always have people willing to pay the amount, but I don't think it will necessarily increase the quality of the writing.

Thanks for dropping by, Rob.

All this change is making my head spin! When I got serious about writing and publishing last year, I wasn't aware of the full extent of the publishing wars. I delved into the process and learned about platform building, self-publishing, ISBNs, ebook formats, etc. I'm still learning. The self-pub vs. legacy pub divide, and 99¢ pricing are among the most debated issues. I'll be watching them as I focus on writing something worth adding to the fray :-)
